The off-the-beaten-path trek in eastern Nepal is the Kanchenjunga Base Camp trek. The remote and strenuous trek takes us to the foothills of Kanchenjunga Himal(8586 m), the world’s third-highest mountain. The trek explores pristine forests, traditional Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa villages, high alpine meadows, glaciers, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. The trek to the Kanchenjunga Base Camp starts in Taplejung district, in the eastern region of Nepal.  The region is less crowded and ideal for adventure seekers who wish to trek in the ultimate wilderness. Trekkers should be physically fit for this trek, as the terrain is off-the-beaten and remote. The trek offers beautiful landscapes and unique cultural traits of Rai, Limbu, and Sherpa communities. The spring and Autumn seasons are most suitable for trekking in this region. We will be fortunate enough to witness colorful rhododendron forests in spring, beautiful meadows, and superb landscapes in the autumn.

Kanchenjunga Base Camp is the initial part of the Great Himalayan Trail, where a Restricted Area Permit and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Project (KCAP) permits are required. Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit (RAP) costs $20/- per person per week for the initial 4 weeks, and Kanchenjunga Conservation Area Permit (KCAP) costs around $17/- per person as a flat fee.

We applied for the Restricted Area Permit on your first day of arrival; it will be approved on the first day if we were able to apply earlier that day; otherwise, we get it today during office hours. We schedule a flight to Chandragadi Airport, Bhadrapur, in the afternoon so that it is easy for us to arrange and manage all the essentials of trekking. We drive to Ilam and visit a tea garden.
