Touring the Heritage city of Nepal is always interesting to learn the story behind the foundation of the city and its tradition. One of the vibrant festivals that have several myths and stories of Kathmandu Valley i.e., Rato Machhindranath Jatra which is also known as Matsyendranath and is a revered deity in Hinduism and Buddhism. Rato Machhindranath is considered the god of rain and compassion. Once Nepal was suffering from drought, the king of Kathmandu Valley requested Guru Machhindranath to visit Kathmandu Valley. When he arrived in the valley, there came rain which made people happy. Later on, King made a humble request to reside in Kathmandu. To honor Machhindranath, annually Rato Machhindranath Bhoto Jatra is celebrated in Lalitpur, Patan city.

The festival is one of the longest festivals in Nepal—the grand wooden Chariot of Rato Machhindranath parades in every alley of Patan city. The festival symbolizes the arrival of Spring and the expectation of good rainfall during the rainy season. During the festival, you will experience traditional music, and cultural dance, full of blessings, community vibes, and devotion. The Jatra is almost a month long and sometimes it may be more than a month. Because of this reason, you can travel in between any dates you are comfortable with during May month.

Day 01

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Upon your arrival at Kathmandu airport, one of our office representatives assist you in transferring to the designated hotel. Stroll around Thamel- a touristic hub.

Day 2: Kathmandu City Sightseeing

We start our tour from the UNESCO World Heritage Site Bouddhanath Stupa. Bouddhanath Stupa, one of the largest stupas in the world, stands as a majestic symbol of Buddhist spirituality and heritage in Nepal. The popular heritage site is located in the eastnorth of Kathmandu Valley. The premises are decorated with colorful prayer flags where you can experience inner peace and tranquility. You can observe and explore the Tibetan Buddhist culture. Pilgrims circumambulate the stupa’s base spinning prayer wheels and chanting mantras. After the spiritual vibes of Bouddhanath, we will drive to Pashupatinath temple. Pashupatinath temple is a sacred Hindu temple that is popular among Hindus throughout the world. The spiritual vibes around the Temple can be experienced as soon as you reach there. The major attraction to Europeans in Pashupatinath temple is cremation at Arya Ghat. After the spiritual tour of these heritage sites, we drive to Kathmandu Durbar Square. We will have lunch around Durbar Square. After lunch, we will visit Kumari Temple, Kasthamandup, Kaal Bhairav, Museum, and many other monuments around Durbar Square. In the afternoon, we will visit another Heritage site Swoyambhunath (Monkey Temple), and complete the city tour for today.

Day 03

Day 3-5: Observe Rato Machhindranath Jatra

We will continue the city tour of Patan during a three-day visit of Patan. We explore and observe the Rato Machhindranath Jatra festivities. We will experience the traditional and cultural rituals, processions, and chariot-pulling ceremonies dedicated to Rato Machhindranath. During these three days, we will have an opportunity to taste Newari food and understand the traditional architecture, Alleys, Bahal.
