One of the vibrant festivals that have several myths and stories of Kathmandu Valley i.e., Rato Machhindranath Jatra which is also known as Matsyendranath and is a revered deity in Hinduism and Buddhism. Rato Machhindranath is considered the god of rain and compassion. Once Nepal was suffering from drought, the king of Kathmandu Valley requested Guru Machhindranath to visit Kathmandu Valley. When he arrived in the valley, there came rain which made people happy. Later on, King made a humble request to reside in Kathmandu. To honor Machhindranath, annually Rato Machhindranath Bhoto Jatra is celebrated in Lalitpur, Patan city.
The festival is one of the longest festivals in Nepal—the grand wooden Chariot of Rato Machhindranath parades in every alley of Patan city. The festival symbolizes the arrival of Spring and the expectation of good rainfall during the rainy season. During the festival, you will experience traditional music, and cultural dance, full of blessings, community vibes, and devotion. The Jatra is almost a month long and sometimes it may be more than a month. Because of this reason, you can travel in between any dates you are comfortable with during May month.
