Indra Jatra in Kathmandu

Festivals in Nepal are interesting to observe and participate in. Nepal has a majority of people who follow Hinduism and the traditions and culture of Nepal are guided by the philosophy of the Hindu religion. Besides this, Buddhism is followed by the 2nd largest population in Nepal. The Hindu and Buddhist communities follow several rituals and customs celebrated as festivals. During this tour, Indra Jatra will be observed at Kathmandu Durbar Square. 

Indra Jatra: Indra Jatra is a centuries-old festival celebrated in Kathmandu. The festival is celebrated to mark the end of the Monsoon season and honor the Hindu god, Indra. The festival continues for seven to nine days based on the Lunar calendar.  During Indra Jatra, several communities and clubs bring their musical processions to Kathmandu Durbar Square. During that day, masked dances, and cultural performances will be conducted in the daytime and the night. The living goddess Kumari and her chariot procession will be a major attraction on that day.

Day 01

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

We welcome you to the premises of Tribhuvan Airport and assist you to transfer to the hotel. A short briefing of the entire tour program during dinner time.

Day 02

Day 2: Explore the history and culture of Kathmandu Valley

Today, we start a cultural tour of Kathmandu Valley after breakfast. We begin a tour of the Pashupatinath temple, a sacred Hindu temple dedicated to lord Shiva. We will visit the cremation area at Arya Ghat. Within the premises of Pashupatinath temple, there are several small and big temples which are built by a different ruler (King of Kathmandu Valley). After Pashupatinath, we drive to Bouddhanath Stupa, the largest stupa in Nepal which is an important pilgrimage site for Buddhists. Drive to Swoyambhunath Stupa in the evening to observe the entire City from a hilltop. Drive back to the hotel.

Day 03

Day 3: Bhaktapur City Sightseeing Tour and Drive to Nagarkot

Today we will visit Bhaktapur City, an ancient city in the Valley that is well-known for its well-preserved culture and traditions. Medieval architecture reflects the enrich cultural heritage and craftmanship of that time. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage site that features temples, palaces, and courtyards from the 15th century.

Day 04

Day 4: Nagarkot Sunrise View and Patan City Sightseeing Tour

We will have an early sunrise view from the hotel. The panoramic view of the Himalayas will be stunning during sunrise. After breakfast, we will drive to Patan City for the Patan tour. Patan Durbar Square is another UNESCO World Heritage site that features twenty-one pinnacle Krishna mandir, Patan Museum, Golden Temple, and many other temples. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 05

Day 5: Indra Jatra Festival at Kathmandu Durbar Square.

Today is the main day of the Indra Jatra festival. All the officials, including the President, visited Basantapur Durbar Square to get a blessing from the living goddess Kumari and give respect to her. The process has been followed for centuries. The chariot of Ganesh, Bhairav, and Kumari pulled during this day. The significance of this grand festival unites the Buddhists and the Hindus of Kathmandu. We will enjoy this show from a top restaurant near Kumari house. From today the charm of the festival resides only in the inner core street of Kathmandu Durbar Square. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Day 6: Departure

One of our office members will assist you in transferring to the Airport 3 hours before your scheduled flight.
