Trekking in eastern Nepal is an authentic adventure and offers one of the least crowded regions. Makalu Base Camp trekking is one of the iconic treks in Nepal, offering unspoiled nature and adventure in the lap of Mount Makalu (8,485 m). The fifth-tallest mountain in the world is located in the Makalu Barun National Park, and this trek leads to the base camp of Makalu Himal. The trail passes through pristine forests, traditional Rai and Sherpa villages, alpine meadows, glacial valleys, and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes. The trekking is relatively remote and challenging, unlike the Everest and Annapurna regions. Makalu trek offers an authentic wilderness experience in Arun and Barun Valleys. The untouched nature makes the surroundings beautiful and ideal for trekkers who wish to experience the serenity and peace in the rural village during the trek.

Day 03

Trek from Num to Seduwa (1,500 m)

We enter the Makalu Barun National Park after registering and validating the permits. Overnight in Seduwa.

Day 04

Trek to Tashigaon (2,100 m)

The main cash crop of this region is cardamom. Today, we trek through farmland, cardamom plantations, and small settlements. We stay overnight in Tashigaon, which is the last large rural village on the way to Makalu Base Camp.  The trek takes around six to seven hours, depending on your fitness. Overnight in Tashigaon.

Day 05

Trek to Khongma Danda (3,500–3,600 m)

We continue our trek to Khongma Danda via Danda Kharka, ascending via a steep trail through rhododendron forest. We trek for 7 hours and finally reach Khongma Danda. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

Day 06

Today, we take a short hike around Khongma Danda for acclimatization. We will rest for a day. Overnight in Khongma Danda.

Day 07

Cross Shipton La Pass (4,200 m) and trek to Dobate (3,860 m)

While crossing Shipton La (4200m), we encounter a snowy trail even in April. We can take a rest for tea while we are in Shipton La; there is only one inn that provides tea and snacks.  The tiring day rewards us with magnificent views of Makalu Himal, Chamling Himal, and so many other smaller peaks. Finally, we reach Dobate and enjoy our lunch there. Overnight at a local tea house.

Day 08

Trek from Dobate to Yangle Kharka(3630m) (Trekking Duration 3-4 Hrs)

We have already crossed High passes and are now entering Barun Valley, a paradise. After Breakfast, we walk slowly downhill to explore Barun Valley, which is rich in flora and fauna. We follow through rhododendron and pine forests. The trail is a steep downside mixed with snow, which ends at the Barun River. Then we walk through a trail with a substantial landslide area.

We reach Yangle Kharka via Themathang Kharka. We can see yaks grazing in the meadows of Yangle Kharka. Overnight stay at the lodge.

Day 09

Today, we acclimatize at Yangle Kharka. We explore Shiva Dhara, a pilgrimage site. People believe it is a spiritual site of lord Shiva and Parvati.  We explore caves and return to Yangle Kharka. Overnight at the same tea house.

Day 10

Trek from Yangle Kharka to Langmale Kharka(4420m) ( Trekking Duration 3hrs)

Today is a relatively easy day for trekking as we descend from our lodge to the river and small monastery. It’s a pleasant, flattish start, keeping the river on your left, with the arresting scent of juniper as you walk. You pass many colorful prayer flags lining the trail. We pass the pastures of Jhak Kharka, Yak Kharka, and Merek, where we can rest for a few minutes and have tea. We walk slowly and steadily since we are already at a high altitude. As we walk, we see a mani wall adorned with prayer flags sitting just in front of the row of rooms. All trekkers enjoy the wilderness of Barun Valley and the beautiful snow-capped mountain range, including Ama Dablam. Overnight at a local tea house.

Day 11

Langmale Kharka – Makalu Base camp(4800m)(Trekking Duration 4-5 hrs)

Our awaited destination is the base camp of the 5th tallest mountain in the world— Makalu Base Camp. Today, we will observe a beautiful sunrise over the snow-capped mountain. After breakfast, we walk to Makalu Base Camp, which is on the trekking trail to Everest Base Camp, and we prefer to do an extreme trek (Great Himalayan Trek). After a couple of hours of walking, we reach a flat area with a locked stone hut – this is Shershong at the elevation of 4630m, where the camping site was used during the camping trek. We follow the Barun valley and glacier lake along the way and reach Makalu Base Camp. From Base Camp, we enjoy a sunset view. Overnight at a local lodge.

Day 12

Explore Makalu Base Camp(4800m)

Today, we climb up to 5300m to the ridge above the base camp. The stunning views that we see are simply superb. Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Nuptse, Peak 7, Peak 6, and other small peaks are too close and will make you spellbound. It is quite a tough trek, so follow the instructions of your guide and retrace the steps that you use to reach the ridge so that you can get back to base camp. Overnight at the same local lodge.
