Swoyambhunath:
Swoyambhunath, the monkey temple which is located in the hillock 3km west of Kathmandu is 2000 years old and is believed to have emerged out from a lotus flower. Swoyambhunath is perhaps the best place to observe religious harmony in Nepal. It is the major landmark in the valley that gives a magnificent view of the valley from the top. There are many chaityas around the temple and two main white chaityas beside the temple. There are other monuments to see in this area such as a huge gold-plated vajra thunderbolt, sleeping Buddha, Buddha statue on the west side of Swoyambhunath, Dewa Dharma Monastery, and finally temple of Harati Mata. The Buddhist stupa sits at the top of the hill and the steep stones leading up to the shrine are quite a challenge. However, there is a way behind from where one can drive up.
Bouddhanath:
Bouddhanath is the largest Buddhist Stupa in Nepal that reflects Tibetan culture and Buddhist symbolism. The temple has become one of the most important centers of Tibetan Buddhism and pilgrimage for meditation. The Tibetans believe that the Stupa contains bone relics of the past Buddha Kashyap. At the ground level, there is a brick wall with 147 inches and 108 images of meditational Buddha Behind the copper prayer wheel. The best time to visit this place is in the early morning and evening.
