Bardiya National Park was declared a national reserve in 1976 and covers an area of 968 sq. km. Bardiya National park is located in the mid-western region and is 585 km far from the capital Kathmandu. The park comprises 30% grassland and 70% Sal forest and has a large number of deer species like Chital, Hog deer, Barasingha, Swamp deer, etc. Other animals such as Antelope, blue bull, Langur Monkey, Sloth beer, etc. are found in the jungle and the park contains eight types of ecosystems. The park headquarters are situated at Thakurdwara and are surrounded by idyllic villages and fields inhabited by an indigenous ethnic group, the Tharu. But the major attractions of this jungle are Bengal Tiger and Rhinoceros. One can see rarer and beautiful animal tigers in their natural habitat during jungle safari. The Babai River runs along to the south of the park while Shivalik Hills adorn its northern extremes. Gharial and freshwater dolphins can be seen near the Karnali, Girwa, and Babai rivers.
